Webcomic! APE Report!

Little Vampires Webcomic!

It’s finally here! The Little Vampires and their friends will be appearing in a weekly webcomic at the newly updated Little Vampires site. Be sure to visit each Wednesday to say hello.

APE Con Report
APE in mid-October was like a family reunion, if the family was the kind with naughty secret handshakes and a strong belief that Iron Maiden and Daft Punk music mash-ups are great ideas.

We got to see some familiar fan faces, like Paul. He was nice enough to rock the runway in one of our shirts. Fierce!

Alina Pete of Weregeek and Moosehead Stew fame taught us a lot about Canadian accents while knoshing with us at Sam’s Diner. Nick and Angela of Think Weasel were awesome enough to help us get a quirky cool hotel room at the Good Hotel. The five of us invaded the Cartoon Art Museum APE party, where we studied the line work of classic cartoonists, danced with a guy in a gorilla suit, and drew each other’s characters on our hands and arms.

This is Alina’s take on my Little Vampires. Good thing Alina’s so cool, ’cause otherwise I’d hate her for drawing my character better than I do. *shakes fist northward*

It felt like everyone else we knew from the crazy creative community was exhibiting at APE again this year. Monster CommuteBinary Winter PressEmonicBen Walker, and Kid Beowulf were nearby to warm our hearts with their awesome heart warmyness. Our friend Woody had his first table and had great success with his Between Mars work. And we got to talk shop with artist Joenis Norac, who is now yet another purveyor of heart warmy creative community building.

Erin Milligan of the Timothy Green webcomic drew some Little Vampires fan art, moving me from warm heart to full-on SQUEE!

More Store News

Some folks have had a little trouble ordering from our store, due to a clumsy bit of web design on my part. It’s not very clear in the shopping cart screen that you have to enter your ZIP code and click “Update Subtotal” before you click the “Check out with PayPal” button. Here’s a clumsily scribbled-upon screenshot to call attention to what I mean:

Cart

If you don’t fill in your ZIP code and click “Update Subtotal” you won’t be able to advance past the shopping cart screen.

We are sorry for the inconvenience, and are working diligently to make the shopping cart a more friendly experience. Thanks for your patience and support, everybody!

Conventionpalooza!

We had a great time at the West Hollywood Book Fair this past weekend. We got to hang with UberLunatic Laura, who showed us just how much she loved blood oranges.

And I saw just what it means to lead the Pug Life, yo.

But there’s no time for love, Dr. Jones, ’cause this weekend, October 10-11, we’re off to Sacramento for Witchapalooza! We’ll be at booths V23 and V24. We will be selling something very special while there . . . you’ll have to come see us or wait for our post-con report to find out what it is. *eeeeeevil grin*

Then it’s off to San Francisco for APE on October 17 and 18. Yes, my lovely Lunatics, we are bat poop crazy.

Our loc at APE is table 429. Follow this handy-dandy map and come see us!

Art Prints in Store

You see that wall over there? Yeah, the naked one. You know what it needs? It needs some art prints.

Art prints are for sale in the Lunasea Studios store! Each print comes in three sizes: wee, not so wee, and FRIGGIN’ HUGE!

Upcoming Appearances

SoCal Lunatics! James and I will be in the Los Angeles area the first weekend of October. We’ll be wandering around the Long Beach Comic Con on Saturday, October 3rd. We won’t have a booth there. We’ll be free range geeks. But we have a good reason for that, because on Sunday we’ll be exhibiting at the West Hollywood Book Fair! We will be in the Comics Scene section, booth number D16. I’ll be face painting my Little Vampires and friends for the first time, so be sure to come see us!

ScareFest Report

We had a blast in the bluegrass at Kentucky’s Scarefest the second week of September. Doing a convention in Kentucky is such a thrill because we get to see family, friends, and fans. And we have some serious UberLunatics in Kentucky.

Brianna not only rocked the Little Vampire shirt at ScareFest, she wore it to Dragon*Con in Georgia. Serious props for pimping my stuff over state lines. Serious.

Susan, the incredible craftswoman behind Paranormal Babies, got my little vampire bats tattooed on her arm. She even had my signature inked on there. Mikey King, of Castle of Color, did the ink work. I teared up when I saw it, ‘cause jeez, someone got my art permanently attached to their body! That’s pretty freakin’ cool.

Allison Tuttle gets a shout-out for interviewing me for The Darkerside Magazine. Anyone fool enough to interview me gets the love.

Lunatic love also goes to Ashley, Thea and Amy, Heather, Christy, Sonia and the most rockinest of librarians, Emily.  They helped us achieve a first: we sold out of all of our books at a convention.

Sonia and Bri, your sketches are in the works!

One last fan shout-out to Chad S. Hawks, proprieter of Chateau Grrr .  Now I’ve had many a fine looking gentleman approach my table and buy my books and art, but Chad was the first with fangs! I am a happily married woman, but am not ashamed to say that I had me quite the Sookie moment when Chad smiled and showed those pointy pearlies. Oh my.

I don’t think my most uber of UberLunatics could top our family when it comes to support, though. James’s mom and her cousins Bill and Evadene drove out from Elizabethtown to see us do our thing. My Mom and Dad spent Saturday and Sunday helping us out in the booth. Ma even danced the merch danced by making outdoor flags featuring the Little Vampires.

My Dad showed the world that he truly understood the meaning of the “Can’t Work. It’s Banana Time” shirt. Look how good that shirt looks on someone not working.

If you’re not working, whether it’s because it’s banana time or some other time, you need to be sportin’ one of these shirts.

We seem to have great luck when it comes to our neighbors at conventions, and ScareFest was no different. Across from our booth was Katherine, a palm reader. I’ve never had my palm read, so I had to give it a go. Katherine had warm hands and confirmed that I was, indeed, crazy. There’s something to this palm reading thing, ‘cause that’s just right on the money. The Fortunato Ink ladies were also across from us, and I just couldn’t resist buying one of their adorable Believe shirts.

Craig and Amy were beside us selling their incredible Dark Imaginings changing portraits. They shared our love of ancient mythology and self-publishing. So they were the kind of people we could talk to for hours at Cracker Barrel. So we did. There’s not much better than good conversation at Cracker Barrel. The only thing that could top that is good conversation at Waffle House.

Recommendations

James and I went to a convention and didn’t exhibit. Crazy, right? We actually had a mini-vacation and went to PAX, the Penny-Arcade Expo for gamers. While there, we ran into our buds at Seattle Geekly. You don’t have to be a Seattle Geek to enjoy their podcast. Check out their video of Jonathan Coulton showing Wil Wheaton just how much we geeks love him.

My second recommendation goes out to all my Lunatic Parents. If you have a Young Lunatic that loves Little Vampires, check out the interactive book What is Bothering Carl? It is adorable, and has the same kind of vibe as Little Vampires. And Andy Hull, who must sleep less than we do, did the writing, art, animation, music, and programming himself. That’s our kind of independent go-getter wacko.

Sac-Anime Report
We exhibited at Sac-Anime in late August, and had a blast yet again. Some of my Uber Lunatics came by to see us, like Barbara, Eli, and Lucas.

We got to see Margaret and Phil again, as well as awesome author Amy Lane. I got to draw in the smallest sketchbook ever.

We acquired many more wonderful Lunatics, many of whom were cosplayed beautifully. I’m particularly fond of my Steampunk ladies, but that’s probably ’cause they bowed at me. You get major points for bowing. Especially since bowing, as opposed to a hand shake or high-five, doesn’t spread nasty germs.

And then there was the ninja.

Yes, I have my very own ninja.

Sac-Anime Appearance

We’re hauling our swag up to Sacramento to give the love to our NorCal Lunatics!

If you’re in the Sacramento area this weekend, August 29-30, swing by Sac-Anime to see us. We will have some copies of the handbound Little Vampires and Friends for sale, along with our new buttons and art prints. I’ll be cosplaying as a writer and artist. You can cosplay as a fan. It will be stellar!

San Diego Comic-Con!

San Diego Comic-Con is right around the corner. We’ve had a small press table at Con for the last two years, but this year we have a booth! We need the room, because we keep cranking out cool stuff for you Lunatics. If you’re lucky enough to have a badge for this year, be sure to see us at Booth 4920, in the Fantasy Illustrators section in the D-G wing of the San Diego Convention Center.

We’re also working hard on making the hand-bound Little Vampires at Play books, which will be premiering at Comic-Con. I’ll keep you posted on their progress, and on the progress of our other cool merch. But if you just can’t wait for Lunatic Updates, you can follow James and I on Twitter: @rhicks and @jhicks.

Lunatic Update! Books and Toys!

Greetings and salutations Lunatics! It’s officially summer, when all the craziness we’ve been working on over here in Lunasea Studios comes to light. There’s so much I want to reveal, but some projects are still in those fragile development stages. But here’s what I can tell you . . .

Project Elohim

Project Elohim issue 6 is being printed! Finally, I know. We’ll have it ready for sale at San Diego Comic-Con International July 22-26. We’ll also have it for sale online around that time. You can get issues 1-5 now at the Lunasea Studios store, and issues 1-3 collected in trade paperback format.

Little Vampires and Friends

The sequel to Little Vampires, Little Vampires and Friends, is ready to be printed. It features the Little Vampires chillin’ with their buds Frank and Wolfie.

So where’s it at? Pssst. Come here. Closer. I’m going to let you know the plans for the book.

My fabulous talentless hanger-on of a husband, James, is working on making a hand-bound version of Little Vampires and Friends. Little Vampires began as a hand-bound book at San Diego Comic-Con International 2007. So to honor it’s history, we’re doing the first run of the sequel as a hand-bound book. The goal is to have them ready for Lunatics to slobber over and buy at Comic-Con. And yes, we’re thinking pre-orders for those poor souls who can’t make it to sunny San Diego this July. You shall be kept posted, whether you want to be or not, bwahahaha.

So what about a larger print run of hardcovers, like we currently have with the Little Vampires books? Here’s where you really have to lean in, ‘cause I’m seriously whispering this.

I’m working on submitting Little Vampires and Friends to an agent. For those of you in the industry, you know what this means. For those of you who aren’t in the industry, it means I’m trying a more traditional publishing route for the Little Vampires sequel. Ideally, an agent would take me on and get my book published by a larger publisher. Then I’d be in the big box bookstores, would become world famous, yadda yadda millions of adoring fans and rolling in cash yadda. That’s the dream, anyway. It could take years to get an agent’s attention. It could happen overnight. It could never happen.

So I can’t say right now how long it will take to get Little Vampires and Friends mass produced. But I want Little Vampire fans to be able to enjoy the further adventures of the diminutive nosferatu before that unknown and possibly never time. Hence the hand-bound version of the book.

I am considering throwing in an exclusive print with purchase of said hand-bound book. I think it should include all three monsters, (Little Vampires, Wolfie, and Frank). What would you Lunatics like to see the friends doing?

Little Vampires Toy

Remember that toy we were getting made? That awesomely adorable plush Little Vampire? There was some drama involved in getting it manufactured. *sigh* But I sprayed some Drama-Be-Gone, and we should be getting Little Vampire plush dolls in September. I know, that’s so far away! But we should have them for sale during that lucrative Halloween to Christmas season. *twiddles fingers evilly* And yes, there will be a pre-order available to Lunatics!

What, you want a sneak preview? If you insist.

Painting

Despite being constantly in a state of crazy busy, I get bored easily, and keep trying new stuff. I think I have Artist Deficit Disorder. Wait, maybe that’s why I’m always crazy busy . . .

Anyway, I did a sketch of Frankenstein, and realized that it might make a cool painting. So here’s a sneak preview of my first attempt at a big ole acrylic piece. It’s still a work in progress, of course, but I already know what I’m going to call it. When completed, it shall be named Frankenlichtenstein. Yes, it’s an art geek joke. Yes, I am an art geek.

frankenlichtenstein

Thanks to Emo and Norma and Mike for being my painting inspirations. If I only get as half as good as you guys, I could die happy.

Monsterpalooza Shout-outs!

We had a great time at Monsterpalooza last month, so I wanted to give some quick shout-outs. Our neighbor was the amazing fantasy sculptor Jason Hite, and his model making partner Jason Bonham. What is it with me meeting guys with the same names? Gerry and Jerry. Jason and Jason. Who’s next? I want a Roger and Roger team, just so we could all get an infinite walkie-talkie loop going.

More shout-outs to the Worst Show on the Web, for interviewing the Worst Interview on the Everything, me. And thanks to Angie for giving my art prints the love. And all the love to Batton Lash and Jackie Estrada, creator and publisher of the classic Supernatural Law. It’s always amazing talking to people who have been in the business longer than I have . . . wait, that’s everyone. When they talk to me like I’m a peer, that’s just freaking amazing with extra amazing sauce.

But the biggest shout-out goes to Bela Lugosi Jr. He bought a Little Vampires book for his son. So yes, Dracula’s grandson owns my book. I don’t know what’s cooler, that, or having the blessing of Dracula’s son.

Any convention with a giant monkey is a good convention.
